About the Ladies Section

 Our History

Putting

Tyneside Golf Club Ladies Section was officially set up in 1906 at the first AGM of the Section. Since 1903, Ladies had been admitted to Tyneside Golf Club on payment of half  a guinea which coincided with the Club moving from the Willows to the Western Falls. At the AGM, Mrs. T. W. Bourn was appointed as the Honorary Secretary, Treasurer and Captain for the year which today would make her half of the Executive Committee! Many social functions were organised to raise money for the section and this has continued to this day to improve the ladies facilities and help finance the section.

In 1907, the Club President, Joseph Cowen, gave the Cowen Bowl to the Ladies and this is awarded as a competition prize. In 1910 Mixed Foursomes and Ladies Team Matches began. There were some exceptional members playing at both national and international competitions including Mrs. T. W. Bourn and Miss. H. Mather. During the First World War, membership declined but increased again after the war reaching 130 by 1928.

The Tyneside of the Past

A good standard of golf has prevailed over the years with the Silver Team winning the Durham Country Anderson Shield in 1932, a trophy which has been won many times over the years. After World War Two, the Ladies continued with County and National success providing three County Captains over the years as well as County Champions. In 1979, the Club Centenary, the Ladies had around 100 members who continued to raise funds to finance the section.

Since equality in 2001, Ladies have had the vote at the Club AGM and a lady can now be elected onto the Club Committee, making them a director of the Club. The Club also now finances the Ladies Section. Although the section has declined in the last decade, the membership is now on the increase again with the Section having around 70 playing, social and life members.
